Top 5 Social Media Alternatives To Facebook

Following Facebook’s data breach scandal in 2018, users are starting to have a better understanding of what Facebook is doing with their data. This has had serious implications for the social media platform, with trust in Facebook plunging by 66% last year. Now, social media marketing agency owners are looking for a social media alternative to Facebook where they can trust that their privacy is respected.

While Facebook has been a great platform for advertisers in the past, top influencers in digital marketing predict a change by 2020. However, finding social media alternatives where private information is never shared or sold to other companies or organisations isn’t hard. People are

already on other platforms—in fact, the typical internet user has an average of 7.6 social media accounts.

Though Facebook owns Instagram, the picture-sharing platform is a different beast entirely. Instagram also experienced massive growth in 2018, reaching one billion monthly active users. On average, users visit the platform at least once a day. This gives you a large, active user-base to engage with.

Advertisers are shifting ad dollars from Facebook to Instagram, especially those located outside of the U.S. or looking to expand internationally. Currently, 80% of the platform’s user-base lives outside of the U.S. It is also an easy platform to shift to if you’re already advertising with Facebook, as Instagram Ads are managed through Facebook’s Ad Manager.

There is also a lot of opportunity to grow your brand through Instagram. Partnering with influencers, providing sponsored content, or creating engaging Instagram Story Ads are all lucrative ways to get more eyes on your business and keep your brand top of mind.

Video content continues to grow as one of the most popular ways people consume content online, and YouTube is at the forefront of this trend. The video platform has 1.8 billion monthly active users, making it Google’s most popular service.

In 2019, video content is expected to claim 80 percent of all web traffic, and YouTube’s numbers support this, with over 1 billion hours of video being watched each day. YouTube on mobile alone reaches more 18-49 year-olds than any cable network in the U.S.

With advanced targeting, remarketing capabilities, and plenty of other features, YouTube is not only a great alternative to Facebook, but is one of the best social media apps for business. Plus, creating a YouTube channel is easy, and creating consistent content for your subscribers will help drive traffic to your business.

Snapchat is the sixth most popular social media platform in the world but is often misunderstood by businesses. The short lifespan of content and the lack of a traditional feed to scroll through leads many businesses to steer clear of the app for their marketing strategies.

The multimedia messaging app allows users to communicate with friends by sending short video clips, animations, and photos called “Snaps.” Snapchat also allows users to post “Stories” and is the social network that pioneered this format, which has since been adopted by Facebook and Instagram.

Though Snapchat doesn’t have as many users as YouTube and Instagram, with just over 188 million daily active users around the world, 71 percent of them are under 34 years old. This makes Snapchat one of the best platforms for social media marketing if you’re targeting Generation Z or Millennial users.

Additionally, Twitter claims that 80 percent of its users can be classified as “affluent Millennials.” This means that the platform is full of Millennials with disposable cash, which they could be spending on your product or services.

There are two ways to advertise on Twitter:

  • Twitter Ads – it is more customizable and allows you to choose a campaign objective and then target your desired audience by location, gender, age, behaviors, and who they follow.

Trust in social media has understandably declined over the past year after prominent platforms received negative press.
