Keyword research is an important and valuable activity in search engine marketing. Your site will rank high with the right keywords. This is why you should know how to do keyword research, determine keyword demand and know which terms and phrases to use with SEO. Keyword research also offers insights on your customers as a whole.
How to Do Keyword Research
Now that you know the value of keyword research, let me teach you how to do it. Here are the steps.
Step 1: Create a List of Topics
Create a list of important and relevant topics about your business. Think about 5 to 10 topics that are important to your business and use those topics to do research on your keywords using the tools that we will describe later on.
If you are a blogger, this may be about the topics that you write about the most, or they may be the ones that pop out in sales conversations. Create a buyer persona and put yourself in the shoes of your buyer—what are the topics that this buyer is interested in? What search terms will you likely use?
Step 2: Create a List of Keywords
Now that you are aware of your topics, it’s time to identify the keywords that will fall under those topics. Keywords are phrases that your target customer is most likely to use when conducting searches, and hitting on the right keywords will help you to rank in search engine results.
Step 3: Research on Related Search Terms
You can then go to Google.com and look at related search terms that appear when you type a certain keyword in the search bar. When you type in and scroll down, you will see some suggestions that are related to your search terms. These suggestions can also give you ideas on more keywords that are related to your topics.
Step 4: Do Keyword Research
After you have identified your keywords and phrases, you can now start doing the actual keyword research. Do your research on the following sources:
- Moz Keyword Explorer
- Google AdWords Keyword Planner Tool
- Google Trends
- Microsoft Bing Ads Intelligence
- Wordtracker’s Free Basic Keyword Demand
Moz Keyword Explorer provides you with accurate monthly search volume data and gives you an idea of how difficult it is to rank your keyword. It also provides the estimated click-through rate and a score that reflects your potential to rank.
Google’s AdWords Keyword Planner tool is also a great tool for doing keyword research. It does not only give keywords and search volumes but it also predicts the cost of running paid ads using these keywords.
Step 5: Analyze Your Keywords
To do this, look at the keywords with the top searches. Identify those with little competition and those that have higher values in terms of cost for paid ad campaigns.
