Search Engine Tools and Services

If you are looking for ways to make your site popular so as to improve your search engine ranking profile, you should know how to use various search engine optimization tools and services. Yes, you may be surprised to know that SEO uses a lot of tools that may be provided by the search engines themselves. Search engines have created these tools so that webmasters like us can create sites that are user-friendly, accessible, and that offer good value.

SEO tools comprise of tools, analytics, and guides that are most often free and that provide opportunities by which websites can interact with search engines.

So, what are these tools and services? Here they are.

Search Engine Protocols

1. Sitemaps

Sitemaps are lists of files that act as maps to guide search engines in what to look for in your site. Sitemaps often feature different types of content such as text, images, videos, and mobile.

There are three types of sitemaps: XML, RSS, and Txt


XML means Extensible Markup Language. This is the most recommended and acceptable sitemap type. This is usually made up of large files because XML requires an open tag and a close tag around each element.


RSS means Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary. This sitemap is said to be easy to maintain because you can easily code it to update it when there is new content. However, it can be harder to manage because it needs to get updated every now and then.


TXT means Text File and it is easy to use because it is made up of one URL per line, up to 50,000 lines. However, it does not allow for the addition of metadata to pages.

2. Robots.txt

Robots.txt is actually a file that is found in the root directory of a website that serves to give instructions to crawlers about your site. With this file, you can tell search engines which areas they don’t have to crawl or which sites they should crawl. They also indicate sitemap file locations and crawl delays.

3. Meta Robots

This tag is responsible for creating instructions for search engine bots per page.

4. Rel=”Nofollow”

The rel=nofollow tag makes you link to a resource while you also remove your vote for search engine purposes. This tells the search engines not to follow the link; however, some search engines will still follow them to discover more new pages.

5. Rel=”canonical”

This tag tells the search bots which of the many versions of the website links is the single and most authoritative version that should get indexed by search engines.

Search Engine Tools

1. Google Search Console

Google search console can create geographical targets, get preferred domains, set URL parameters and scan for malware, crawl errors and HTML issues. You can submit your sitemap, test your robots.txt files, adjust links and submit a change of address requests here.

2. Bing Webmaster Tools

This tool consists of Sites Overview, an interface that gives you the site’s overall performance in Bing search results. You can also view crawl stats here, as well as the indexing and the site traffic.

3. MOZ Open Site Explorer

Moz’s Open Site Explorer is also a good tool to find out valuable insights of your website and its links. With this tool, you can identify powerful links, find the strongest domains, analyze anchor text distribution, compare two websites at once and find social media sharing metrics.
