When it comes to running your own business or digital marketing agency, we know that there are a lot of opportunities for failure. Some failures are inevitable, but the best way to avoid failure it to remain vigilant, motivated, and engaged with your goals and your business.

We’ve all heard about the habits that many successful people adopt in their daily lives, such as reading and exercising every day, but we decided to get more specific in this article. Today we’re addressing the habits specific to running a digital marketing agency that can help you succeed in your field.

1. Learn Something New About Digital Marketing

Whether you’re having some difficulty getting your agency off the ground or you’re already finding success, it’s important to always be looking to learn more. This is actually particularly important if you think that you’re already doing okay—it’s never a good idea to get complacent. The fact of the matter is, no matter how well you’re doing or how much you think you know, there’s always something new to learn.

This is especially true in a field like digital marketing, where technology is always changing and new marketing techniques and trends are constantly being made out of these new technologies. Luckily, there are many great resources, such as online courses, conferences, and blogs and vlogs from other marketers that you can learn from.

Make it a goal to take a few minutes out of your day to learn something new about digital marketing, whether it’s about a new tool or capability from one of your favorite marketing platforms, or reading up on some of the fundamental elements of successful digital marketing.

2. Study Marketing/Sales Theory & Psychology

Though learning new things that are specific to digital marketing is great, it’s also important to remember there’s more to digital marketing than what we see and do on the surface. To truly be a success in this industry, you should also be studying up on the fields that have such a big influence on digital marketing.

There are a number of educational resources you can look to in order to build your knowledge of these areas, including books and even textbooks. Just because you’re not in school doesn’t mean you should ever stop studying. As I mentioned before, there’s always something that you can learn to make your business an even bigger success.

While sales theory is an obvious topic to become informed about, don’t ignore or discount psychology. By delving into psychology, you’ll be able to get a better understanding of not only how your client thinks and how to approach things from a sales perspective, but also how to fully engage with an audience and grab their attention when developing campaigns. Set aside half an hour or an hour every day to study some of the basics in these fields and you will be amazed at the results.

3. Use Your Surroundings to Build Inspiration

The average American is exposed to approximately 4,000 to 10,000 ads every day. With so much exposure, it’s easy to ignore and avoid these—especially as a marketer yourself—but avoiding these ads is the very last thing you should be doing.

In order to get become a better marketer, it’s so important to always be looking for new inspiration, even if that means taking inspiration from your competitors. As you go through your daily life, pay attention to ads done by other businesses and analyze what they are doing. Learn from their successes and failures, and see what you think makes it effective or how it can be improved.

Even more helpful, ask yourself questions when you find yourself naturally engaging with this kind of content. Ask yourself ‘what made me open/view this ad’ and figure out how you can apply it to your business. Even studying the commercials you see on TV will help you get an idea of what big-time marketers are doing.

4. Test Different Methods

Sometimes, habit and complacency can be the enemy of creativity and success. It’s easy to continue going along with something that might be working, never realizing that there is a better way just out of reach.

This is why it’s important to try something new every now and then, because you should always be trying to improve. Even a small tweak in the way you do something can help you discover a huge improvement.

Don’t be nervous to test something new every day, even if it’s something small. Try new content topics, use different types of copy and creative, switch up your ad objectives on social channels like Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, etc., or even test different funnels. Any small thing you can do to challenge yourself to think differently or test something new, do it.

5. Network and Build New Relationships

Networking is the lifeblood of any good marketing agency. Marketing agencies have to keep a steady flow of customers coming through the door to keep their business alive, and the best way to do this is to network with other business owners and potential customers. Landing customers is all about establishing a good relationship, and you should be looking for opportunities every day to build new relationships or strengthen lasting ones.

This isn’t just about speaking directly to potential clients either, as you should also be looking to establish relationships with other industry-related professionals like web designers, graphic designers, photographers, ppc experts, content teams, etc. because it’s a great way to get referral business. Additionally, professionals from other industry can be a great source of new information for you, to help you continue learning and make your digital marketing agency as successful as it can possibly be.

By keeping these habits in mind every day, you will be able to keep the growth of your business at the top of your mind. Each of these habits is designed to keep you on a forward momentum to keep you learning and landing new business.
