How To Get The Grey or Blue Checkmark On Facebook

If you’re a person who has ever been on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter, then you’re probably familiar with the small blue checkmark that hovers next to the name of any celebrity of public figure that you follow. But did you know that businesses have a little checkmark of their own?

In this post I’ll discuss why you want a checkmark of your own, and how to get a grey checkmark on Facebook for your business.

What’s the Difference Between a Blue and Grey Check?

There are two different kinds of checkmarks, or ‘badges’ used to verify pages on Facebook, with each having a specific meaning. There are different requirements to get verified for each.

Blue ‘badge’

A blue checkmark on a profile or Page indicates that Facebook has confirmed that this is the authentic Page or profile for a public figure, media company, or brand. This badge is much more difficult to get, and is reserved for figures or brands that have more national or international recognition.

Grey ‘badge’

A grey checkmark on a Page indicates that Facebook has confirmed that this is the authentic Page for a business or organization. These badges are much more common, and are perfect for small businesses or local brands.

Why Does My Business Need One?

There are many benefits to getting a checkmark on your business’s Facebook page, regardless of the color you’re able to achieve.

The biggest benefit is that it adds credibility to your page. Particularly for customers who may not be entirely comfortable dealing with businesses digitally, such as an older demographic, a checkmark will go a long way toward reassurance.

A checkmark will give your business the authenticity it needs to help alleviate customer anxiety and reassure them that they won’t be scammed. It will also help to separate you from the many online businesses that have yet to realize the benefits of verification. Anything that separates you from your competitors online is always a plus!

Aside from assuaging the doubts of new online customers, having a checkmark will also help your business show up higher in search results. As more businesses add a digital and social media component to their marketing strategy, making your business stand out and reach the eyes of the customer first is one key to success.

However, it’s important to remember that once you get your checkmark, you still have to be a good Facebook user. Facebook reserves the right to revoke the badge at any time if they find that you have violated the terms of use as set out by Facebook. This includes adhering to their Facebook ad policies, should you choose to run ad campaigns.

How Do I Get My Checkmark?

So now that you know exactly why you need to get your checkmark for your business on Facebook, you need to get the steps in motion to get verified. There are two options available to you to get this process done. The first is to simply be an admin on the Page, and the second is to go through Facebook Business Manager.

If you were the person who created the Page in the first place, then you will already be an admin. If someone else created it, but you are in charge of getting them their checkmark, then they will need to make you an admin by access the Page Roles column in Settings and adding your name in the role of admin.

To get a checkmark, the Page will also need a profile photo and a cover photo. Once these are set up, you can get verified using the following steps:

To verify your page when not using Facebook Business Manager:

  1. 1. Click Settings at the top of your Page
  2. 2. From General, click Page Verification
  3. 3. Click Verify this Page, then click Get Started
  4. 4. Enter a publicly listed phone number for your business, your country, and language
  5. 5. Click Call Me Now to allow Facebook to call you with a verification code
  6. 6. Enter the 4-digit verification code and click Continue

To verify your page when using Facebook Business Manager:

  1. 1. Click Settings at the top of your Page
  2. 2. Click General
  3. 3. Go to Page Visibility, then click Edit
  4. 4. Click Verify this Page, then click Get Started
  5. 5. Enter a publicly listed phone number for your business, your country and language
  6. 6. Click Call Me Now to allow Facebook to call you with a verification code
  7. 7. Enter the 4-digit verification code and click Continue.

Once you’ve followed these steps, you will have to play a little bit of a waiting game, though Facebook will usually notify you within a few days to let you know when your verification is completed. While you’re waiting, make sure your business’s page is as good as it can be by ensuring that it is linked to your website, that all of the other page information is filled out in detail, and that you continue to share content with your followers regularly.

While getting your grey checkmark can help your business immensely, that doesn’t mean you should be lax in your efforts to continue to grow your audience and engage with your followers. This is just one step of the process of ensuring your brand is doing the most it can on Facebook and other digital avenues.
